Galway gears up for faith festival

Galway is to have a city-wide mission and festival of faith in July.

Creideamh, as the fortnight is being called, is an evangelisation drive for both those with faith and active in their parishes, and for those who are not.

It involves several Catholic groups in a concerted effort to bring the Gospel to as many as possible in Galway.

Bishop Martin Drennan, who invited the groups to get involved, will facilitate a question and answer session in a café in Galway.

Redolent of the European city missions initiated by the Cardinals of Brussels, Paris, Vienna and elsewhere, the Galway event will include three parish missions, lunchtime Café debates, and a gazebo in Eyre Square.

A free Newspaper will be distributed during the event.

“We were inspired by the Cardinals and the fact that the Church has been calling for an evangelization that is new in its method and fresh in its energy,” Rob Clarke, project manager, told ciNews.

The parishes of Ballybay, Litirmoir and Ballinfoyle will have missions and there will be special ceremonies in the Franciscan Abbey.

Teams will visit homes and invite the people of the parishes to the mission nights. Franciscans Friars of Renewal (Moyross) will facilitate one parish, the Céilí community, Kilbeggan another, and the Corrymeela John the Baptist Community will conduct the evening of welcome in a third parish.

Mass at 4 o clock and prayer and adoration in the Franciscan Abbey in the evenings are expected to be high points.

Lynch’s Café and An Tobar Nua, (which has an extensive collection of Christian books and music) will host lunchtime and evening sessions which will include some entertainment but also debates tackling subjects such as the key to a successful Christian marriage.

Bishop Martin Drennan will facilitate a questions and answers session.

In Eyre Square there will be entertainment such as music and mime and even an escapeologist, and leaflets and the mission newspaper will be handed out.

“It is a way to connect with people. On one level it is entertaining but in another it is a basis from which to then share with people,” says Rob Clarke.

The event is being organized by Tine, a Catholic leaders Network, which includes parish groups, lay movements and others from around the country, all with aim for the new evangilisation.

Monsignor Pat Lynch is president of the group, and Rob Clarke is project manager.

Creideamh’09 will run from 4-19 July in Galway.
