Priest moves to Hawaii government homelessness job

A Catholic priest is leaving his position in the church to join Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie's administration as the state's homelessness coordinator.

Marc Alexander previously served under Bishop Larry Silva as vicar general of the Catholic Church in Hawaii, overseeing operations of the 1,300-employee operation.

Silva said Thursday he was "shocked" and "extremely disappointed" by Alexander's decision to withdraw from the ministry.

Alexander said he will work to eliminate homelessness by bringing together government and private resources address the fundamental need for shelter.

Alexander said he was inspired by Abercrombie's vision for "A New Day in Hawaii."
