Hong Kong diocese ‘regrets’ priest’s ‘demon’ jibe

The Hong Kong diocese has issued a statement saying  it “regrets” the remarks of a priest who likened tycoon Li Ka-shing to the devil.

A statement Thursday in church publication Kung Kao Po says that it “regrets causing unhappiness” to Li, one of Asia’s richest men, with wealth estimated at more than $20 billion, Canadian Press reports.

The devil comment was made by a local priest criticizing alleged greed by Hong Kong property developers.

The Kung Kao Po statement said that after a meeting between church vicar general Michael Yeung and Li representative Gerald Ma, Li expressed understanding of the case, and pledged to continue supporting Catholic social programs in Hong Kong.
