National tour of Mary MacKillop cross begins

The MacKillop Cross will arrive in Goulburn on Sunday as the first stop in a national tour in honour of Australia's first saint, says the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn's news page.

Organised by the Knights of the Southern Cross, on behalf of the Sisters of St Joseph, the cross will travel through each Australian state and territory before returning to Sydney in time for canonisation celebrations and the Festival of Faith at St Mary's Cathedral.

The cross was constructed from timber in the floor of the first Woods/MacKillop school-house in Penola.

Two crossed were made from the floorboards, one was presented to Pope John Paul II in 1986 as a gift from the Archdiocese of Sydney.

The second was for St Mary's Cathedral and was used during the 1995 beatification ceremonies.
