Ennis sculpture to commemorate nuns

A new sculpture is being commissioned in Ennis, Co. Clare, to honour the contribution made to the town by its successive generations of nuns.

The project is sponsored by the Ennis Sculpture Trail Initiative, which has been responsible for a programme of public artworks in the town.

Spokesman Donal Griffin explained that the idea of a sculpture to commemorate nuns from all congregations had been in the pipeline for some time.

He said the sculpture would be erected in an archway beside Ennis Friary and depicts a nun with a number of children around her.

“It will be very tasteful and will be in marble,” he added.

Mr Griffin said nuns have had, “a huge role in terms of education and care of people in the community and for the love they have shown to so many over the years.”

He said the sculpture would cost approximately €11,000 and was being commissioned from artist Barry Wrafter who has been involved in designing other public artworks in Co. Clare.

Mr Griffin said he hoped the monument would be ready for erection by next September and said that, while his group sometimes runs fundraising campaigns to pay for sculptures, this would not be necessary on this occasion as an annual grant from Ennis Town Council would be used to cover the cost.

Plans are at advanced stage for another sculpture in one of the town’s cemeteries, this time to commemorate people buried in unmarked so-called pauper graves.
