Moyross monks celebrate open-air Mass in Newcastlewest

Members of the Franciscan Order (Gray Friars) who have been based in Moyross in Limerick City for the past two years celebrated an open air Mass in Newcastle West last weekend following an invitation from a locally based residents group.

The Sharwood Residents Association had invited the American-born Friars to their estate to celebrate the opening of a new family resource centre in the area.

The American based Franciscan Friars of the Renewal set up a mission in the Limerick Estate in 2007 and has since been supporting the local community in efforts to address its challenges and anti-social behaviour.

Newcastle West and its estates has received less than favourable press in the past according to West Limerick Resources, which is assisting in a family support network in the town.

Family resource worker Louise Shanahan said: “With many of the community based initiatives beginning in the Sharwood Resource House, the local residents association felt that the estate would be the perfect venue in which to recognise the important work which the monks are undertaking in Moyross, while also celebrating their own achievements.”

“A number of months ago, the residents association decided that they would like to share their pride in their achievements with the whole community and came up with the idea of inviting the monks from Moyross to celebrate Mass here. They are absolutely delighted that it came to pass,” she said.
