Pope Benedict XVI will grant Plenary Indulgences during the Year of Priests. According to a new Vatican decree, priests ''who, on any day, devotedly pray Lauds or Vespers before the Blessed Sacrament exposed to public adoration or in the tabernacle'' and laity who ''in church or oratory, devotedly attend Holy Mass and offer prayers to Jesus Christ, supreme and eternal Priest, for the priests of the Church, or perform any good work to sanctify and mould them to His Heart'' are granted Plenary Indulgence.
The indulgences can also be applied to priest's deceased confrÉres as per the decree's guidance.
The Year for Priests gets underway on June 19 and has been called in honour of St John Vianney.

ReplyDeleteSounds like Catholic "cap & trade" to me!
Jimmy Mac
Peddling free Indulgences.
ReplyDeleteAre they trying to distract us from the truth and the corruption within the Church by throwing us these little crumbs of Indulgences to try and get us back inside the Churches?
We can't give you any money because we are broke but we can give you an INVISIBLE Indulgence and you have to believe it exists so come on get yours free.
It is a one time SPECIAL OFFER and as Tesco says Every Little Helps.
The Church does not do us any favours so they must be quite DESPERATE at the moment.
The Poster above is a FARCE as far as I am concerned.
ReplyDeleteMEN OF TRUTH..........
No way. Our Parish Priest does not know the meaning of the word
T R U T H.
He proved it when he put his hand on the bible and LIED, LIED, LIED.
Fiddling - and peddling - while Rome burns!
ReplyDeleteMy pp just doesn't get it, poor fellow. He almost suggested the other Sunday - after reading diocesan projected forecasts of the numbers of priests available in 2014, (forecasts which, BTW, took NO account of possible deaths or departures before retirement age!) - he almost suggested that the Church was needing more involved support from laypersons.
Guess what? His longsuffering social committee aka fundraisers-for-ever has resgned en bloc, and he wants more folks to come forward to run his raffles, treasure hunts, Christmas Fayres etc.
Dash it all. What did they teach them in the seminary 20 years ago? Since he does very little but go on holiday, pilgrimage or retreat why cannot he run his own raffles?
The whole idea of indulgences is ridiculous. Do people really believe in this any more? One new convert calls it "brownie points for prayer"
ReplyDeleteand this is NOT prayer
The timing is interesting, so soon before the reports on Cloyne and Dublin.
Few will trust priests now and this will not help matters.
The problem is that some ordinary folk, especially the older generation will believe this.
We call all this activity from the Vatican "fiddling while Rome burns" ' it bears no relation to the reality of the situation now.
Angry Catholic; please ... Concerned for YOUR welfare in all this now. Peace? They are really not worth your pain; leave them to God; this is HIS job now.
I'm afraid we can't just leave them to God - he does not have a hot line to earth to deal with the day to day woes of his children.
ReplyDeleteAt times he needs a bit of help from us down here and not afraid to deal with these rotten men and stand up to them.
That is what shocks them that people are FINALLY taking off their tinted glasses and seeing them for what they really are and actually standing their ground and fighting back by whatever means at their disposal to OUT these men.
It used to be they were let away with anything. Not any more.
It can take years for the wheel to turn slowly but it does eventually turn and these rotten arrogant men will finally get their comeuppance here on earth and maybe a bit more when they reach the gates of St. Peter.
Why should we sit back and throw ourselves under their dirty feet any more. It is time we got the backbone to fight back.
Parish Priest mentioned above sounds like ours. Always missing out on the golf course, going for long walks by the sea, taking holidays with his beloved, going on retreats because he loves to space out at meditation time, taking extended study breaks, his list of SCAMS is endless and the longer list of those who throw themselves under his feet to do the real work in the Parish is endless. More fools they are.
