Vatican: Shroud of Turin to go on display in 2010

Pope Benedict XVI announced that the famous Shroud of Turin, which many Christians believe to be Jesus Christ's burial cloth, will go on rare public display in 2010.

The pontiff announced the news on Monday at the Vatican in front of 7,000 faithful from the archdiocese of the northern Italian city of Turin.

"In the spring of 2010 there will be another Solemn Exposition of the Shroud," said Benedict.

He said the display would provide "an appropriate moment to contemplate that mysterious face which silently speaks to the hearts of men, inviting them to recognise therein the face of God."

The shroud was last shown to the public in the year 2000 when over a million visitors viewed it in the Turin cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.

It was displayed to commemorate the jubilee that marked 2000 years since the death of Jesus Christ.

Carbon dating done on the piece of linen cloth by independent teams of scientists from the UK, the United States and Switzerland has revealed that the shroud dates from Medieval times, about 1300 years after Jesus lived.

However, Catholics around the world maintain that the shroud is an authentic remnant of Christ's crucifixion.
