Gay Anglican bishop forms civil union

An openly homosexual Anglican bishop joined his partner in a civil-union ceremony on June 8.

Bishop Gene Robinson, who heads the Episcopal diocese of New Hampshire, made the legal contract with his longtime partner, Mark Andrew, in a civil ceremony, the diocese announced.

That ceremony was followed by a "service of thanksgiving" in an Episcopal church.

The 2003 election of Bishop Robinson to lead the New Hampshire diocese in precipitated a crisis in the worldwide Anglican communion, with some conservative Anglican bishops insisting that they cannot remain in communion with a church that allows active homosexuals to assume leadership.

The issue is likely to dominate discussion at this year's Lambeth Conference-- to which Bishop Robinson has not been invited. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
