Catholic church enters drinking debate

The Catholic Archbishop of Hobart, Adrian Doyle has called for restrictions on alcohol advertising.

Archbishop Doyle says binge drinking by young people cannot be accepted by society as a normal way of living.

He says excessive drinking often leads to family violence, vehicle crashes and anti-social behaviour.

Archbishop Doyle says people need to take personal responsibility for their behaviour.

"In the end with all these things of course it's the moderation of one's own personal behaviour that will be the ultimate determining factor as to whether people can avoid this pattern of conduct or whether they go down head-long into this path," Archbishop Doyle said.

He says a combination of restrictions on the advertising of alcohol, and education about the dangers should be urgently considered.

"There is a process in the community whereby people are alerted to these dangers by advertising in the way in which we've adressed issues and dangers around smoking and drugs and now it looks as if we've got to take up the question of excessive drinking as well."
