New pastor looks forward to serving flock at Christ the Servant

He said it's a loving, non-judgmental place to be.

And now, the Rev. Kevin Fitzgerald is the new priest who will be leading Christ the Servant Church.

Christ the Servant Church formed in March 2006, breaking off from the Roman Catholic Church and led by Fr. Ed Cachia, formerly associate pastor at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Cobourg.

The church has been going a full year without Fr. Cachia, but last Sunday inducted two new pastors, Fr. Fitzgerald and the Rev. Marie Bouclin.

Fr. Fitzgerald is originally from Midland, but now lives in Little Britain. He attended Laurentian University and received his Honours Bachelor of Arts in philosophy, law, and social and religious studies.

He has been a bishop in the Community Catholic Church since June 2006, having been ordained as a priest in August 2004.

He has recently studied at Lakehead University to get his teaching degree.

Fr. Fitzgerald is the father of two children: Brenden, 11 and Lauren, 14.

He said he's excited about starting his new life at Christ the Servant.

"It's progressive; it's inclusive.," he said.

"We offer love and welcome to people and provide a spiritual home to those who seek answers.

"It's for people who no longer fit with their church of origin," he said.

Fr. Fitzgerald said he grew up Roman Catholic, but found he disagreed with many of the Church's rules, specifically those concerning the ordination of women and forbidding priests from marrying.

"Faith is not static," said Fr. Fitzgerald, explaining that he wanted to get away from the rigid manmade rules.

But he said his Church and the Roman Catholic Church have the same sacraments and the same mission.

He said the foundation of their church is the two rules set by Jesus: "Love God, and love your neighbour."

Anyone is welcome at Christ the Servant.

"Those who seek God will be given the Light," he said.

Although Community Catholic Church and Christ the Servant Church are not joined, Fr. Fitzgerald said he believes that one day "it could happen."

Sunday services at Christ the Servant Church are held at Cold Springs Memorial Centre, 3844 Burnham St., Cold Springs, at 10:30 a.m.
