Communities urged to protect their children'

AN ARCHBISHOP yesterday warned that today's emphasis on child protection must not eclipse the responsibility of communities to care for their children.

The Anglican Archbishop of Dublin Dr John Neill gave the message in his Easter sermon during a Holy Communion service in Christ Church Cathedral.

Archbishop Neill said that Jesus Christ challenged the abuse of power and he emphasised the needs of the weak, the sick and the poor.

"Jesus placed a special value on children and their protection," he added.

"Jesus questioned value systems based on strength and success -- and pointed to the meek and humble and lowly".

Archbishop Neill said that through the Resurrection "the way of Jesus was vindicated", and that the challenges he issued to the society of his own day remained a challenge to the world we live in today.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Archbishop Neill explained that we have to be careful in dealing with young children, that we may lose the responsibility we have as communities to care for the young.

"This must not happen," the archbishop added.
