The Federal Shariat Court of Pakistan has ruled that death is the
only punishment for blasphemy and ordered the removal of an option for
life imprisonment that had been permitted under Pakistani law, the
Lahore-based Pakistan Today reported.
The court, according to its website, is empowered by the nation’s
constitution “to examine and decide the question whether or not any law
or provision of law is repugnant to the injunctions of Islam.”
According to the Fides news agency, four Christians were accused of blasphemy in November.
