Belarus: Catholic priest released to house arrest, but treason prosecution continues

KGB accuses priests Lazar of state treasonPolice in Belarus have released a priest who was being held on treason charges, but he remains under house arrest, and prosecutors consider to investigate his case, the Forum 18 news service reports.

The release of Father Vladislav Lazar, who had been held for 6 months, was “a complete surprise,” a spokesman for the bishops of Belarus told Forum 18.

Authorities in Belarus have refused to supply details about the charges against Father Lazar, who insists on his insistence.

Investigators have questioned Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz of Minsk, saying that the prelate should have been responsible for the priest’s activities.
