Njue denounces splinter group

A day after the Ecumenical Catholic Church ordained two married priests, John Cardinal Njue said the group would remain split from the Roman catholic church as its members had been automatically ex-communicated.

Njue warned Catholic faithful not to be misled into thinking the Catholic Church had changed it's practice of ordaining celibate priests.

Shiundu was ordained Sunday as a Bishop of the Ecumenical Church of Christ formely known as the Reformed Catholic Church (RCC).

Father Shiundu was excommunicated from the Catholic Church in 2004 after he allegedly impregnated a nun when he served in West Pokot District.

Bishop Maurice Crowley of the Diocese of Kitale urged members of the Catholic Church to boycott the function.

"It has no connection with our church and I forbid Catholics from attending the function or involving themselves the church's activities," said Crowley.

Cardinal Njue however said the Roman Catholic church still does not sanction marriage for priests.

The Ecumenical Catholic church is a splinter group of the Catholic Church that allows its clergy to marry.

According to the Roman Catholic Church, a priest is expected to practice celibacy, but Njue says that the church does not impose this on any priest who is unable to remain faithful to his celibacy vows.

Njue denied allegations that there were priests in the Roman Catholic church secretly going against their vows.

Njue at the sametime said he will be examining the practices of the Catholic Charismatic renewal movement to determine whether it was operating in line with the Roman Catholic church beliefs.

The Cardinal said he will make his decision on the Charismatic group that has been present in the church for many years after meeting with its leaders.
