New Bishop Of Lancaster

The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Bishop Patrick O’Donoghue as Bishop of Lancaster.

Bishop O’Donoghue submitted his resignation in accordance with can. 401 § 1 of the Code of Canon Law.

He is succeeded by the Rt Rev Michael Campbell OSA.

Bishop Campbell, formerly coadjutor bishop of the diocese, becomes the sixth Bishop of Lancaster.

Bishop O’Donoghue served as the fifth Bishop of Lancaster from 4 July 2001 to 1 May 2009.

Diocesan information

Formed in 1924, by Pope Pius XI, the Diocese of Lancaster comprises of the Catholic community in all of Cumbria and Lancashire north of the Ribble.

It has 108 parishes and 87 Catholic schools and colleges and has care for a Catholic population of approximately 110,000 people
