End near for European Christianity: Schonborn

In a sombre Easter message, Vienna Cardinal Christoph Schonborn has warned that "the time of Christianity in Europe is coming to an end."

Speaking to thousands of believers in the capital's Stephansdom, Cardinal Schonborn said: "The time of Christianity in Europe is coming to an end. A Christianity, which achieved such great things like this cathedral or the wonderful music we will hear today."

He said faith in Christianity in European society was lacking, the Austrian Times reports.

Cardinal Schonborn had recently tried to present the Church as more open minded when he attacked those who claimed the Austrian Catholic Church has a problem with sex.

He said the Church's role should be to orient people and give them the benefit of its experience.

"The Church can help people acquire the right attitude towards sex, which is not an isolated thing of all consuming importance. The quality of the entire relationship is what is important in a male-female partnership."

Schonborn's statements were seen as a bid to react to increasing numbers of people leaving the Catholic Church over several controversies.
