Priest row: Bishops council goes to Vatican

The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council has urged the Vatican to take action against Cochin Bishop John Thuttunkal, who has landed in a scandal for adopting a young woman for “spiritual enrichment”, at the earliest.

If Thuttunkal faces action from the Vatican, he would go down in the history of the Catholic Church of India as the first bishop to unceremoniously quit the post.

Bishops Council secretary Fr Stephen Alathara told The Indian Express that they have sought a decision on the issue.

“By offering apology, the bishop has already admitted to the offence. Hence, an action would be inevitable,” said Stephen.

On Monday, the bishop had told priests from his diocese that he was ready to accept any action from the Vatican if it found the adoption against Church tenets.

According to sources, the bishop would be stripped off the charge of the diocese and an administrator would be appointed until the Vatican completes a detailed inquiry.
