Italian queers keep fighting

Activists from the Italian gay rights group, Arcigay, hold aloft their flags in Rome during a demonstration in front of the Vatican, last Sunday.

Their protest commemorated the death of gay Sicilian Alfredo Ormando, 39, who set himself on fire in St Peter’s Square on January 13 1998, in protest against the anti-gay policy of the Roman Catholic Church.

In related news, Arcigay’s president, Fabrizio Marrazzo, has received telephone and text message death threats.

“The threats that have been sent have certainly troubled myself and my dearest family, but we are not deterred … [in what we do] to combat homophobia in the city of Rome,” Marrazzo said.
