The Dublin Council of Churches has welcomed the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin as a member for the first time. The chairman of the Dublin Council of Churches, Rev. Godfrey O'Donnell-- who represents the Romanian Orthodox Church-- announced the decision to welcome the Catholic Church as a member of the Irish group.
The announcement came as the ecumenical group began its annual observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, with a service in Dublin's Catholic cathedral.
Archbishop Alan Harper of the (Anglican) Church of Ireland was the preacher for the service on January 18.
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin's Catholic archdiocese thanked the ecumenical group for welcoming the Catholic presence, saying that it was "a positive visible step that will further common witness among the churches in Dublin."
The Dublin Council of Churches now includes Catholics as well as representatives of the Coptic Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Lutheran, Rumanian Orthodox, Presbyterian, Anglican, Georgian Orthodox, Syrian Orthodox, Methodist, Russian Orthodox, and Unitarian Churches, and Quaker communities in Ireland.
