Catholic Priest Charged with Perjury

A Roman Catholic priest in the Diocese of Scranton was arrested this morning at his home in Scranton.

Father Joseph Sica was charged with perjury in connection with a grand jury investigation of Dunmore businessman and owner of Mount Airy Casino and Resort, Louis DeNaples.

According to court papers, Sica was charged for lying about his relationship with the late Russell Bufalino, an organized crime boss.

Court papers state Fr. Sica testified he only met Bufalino by chance and had no relationship with him. Evidence included photographs of Sica arm-in-arm with Bufalino and letters written by the priest to Bufalino.

One letter was written to former Pennsylvania first lady Ginny Thornburgh asking her help in getting Bufalino released from prison. In the letter Sica called the crime boss his friend and said he was innocent.
