RC Nun Praised by Stonewall (USA)

In Stonewall's latest e-bulletin, Ben Summerskill, Chief Executive, celebrates the failiure of the Catholic church to scupper the 'goods and services' bill.

While praising those who supported Stonewall during the campaign, Summerskill commented on those who went public with their virulent homophobia. "The hatefulness of some of the current campaigners against equality is what will really stick in my mind. We were shocked that the Metropolitan Police gave some fringe protestors permission to demonstrate outside Parliament last month carrying posters inciting hatred against gay people.

"But there was one thing even more frightening than the hate-filled faces of campaigners claiming to be Christian. It was that some of them had forced six and seven and eight year old children to accompany them on a freezing cold night and wave homophobic posters too."Those children are growing up learning to hate.

There couldn’t be any better reminder of why our new Education for All programme, designed to tackle homophobia in Britain’s schools, is so vitally important. There couldn’t be any better reminder either that millions of Christians don’t share the intolerant and inflammatory views of some of these people. Sister Frances Domenica, who founded Douglas House hospice in Oxford, is one of them.

"She currently features on the BBC’s Children of Helen House series, in which she was shown endorsing the decision of a young man with a serious disability to choose to have sex with a prostitute. She didn’t feel entitled to force her morals on 22-year old Nick Wallis.

"When I met Sister Frances recently, I asked her if she would ever contemplate turning someone away from one of her hospices on the grounds of sexual orientation, the right that the Catholic Church and others have recently been campaigning for so loudly. The look of abject horror on Sister Frances’s face told you all you need to know about real Christian values".
