Mea Culpa, mea culpa...?? (USA)

LAS VEGAS The top official with the Las Vegas Diocese says he's saddened and shocked by recent allegations about two local Roman Catholic priests -- including one accused of attacking and groping a church soloist in a parish office.

Bishop Joseph Pepe (pic'd alongside) says church administrators also were shaken by allegations that another priest misappropriated thousands of dollars of a parishioner's money.

Pepe blames those he calls an irresponsible few individuals for actions that he says caught church administrators off-guard.

The diocese is not providing legal representation for Father George Chaanine -- who is jailed facing charges including attempted murder and sexual assault.

He's accused of hitting a church soloist over the head with a wine bottle and attacking her January 26th at the Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church office.

The other priest -- the Reverend William Kenny -- was placed on leave last week from Christ the King parish in Las Vegas.

That was after the Las Vegas Review-Journal questioned the diocese about a sealed lawsuit involving accusations that Kenny spent a parishioner's money for himself.
