Abortion Clinic for Lisbon (Portugal)

Following a national referendum that showed public support for legal abortion, entrepreneurs in Portugal have unveiled plans for a massive 3-story, $3.5-million abortion clinic in the heart of downtown Lisbon.

Backers of the proposed facility, to be called the Os Arcos clinic, say that their potential clientele will be made up primarily of single women between the ages of 20 and 35 who are economically independent.

Because the number of voters participating in the February 11 referendum fell short of 50% of those eligible, the results were not binding and the legal ban on abortion remains in place.

However the country’s Socialist government has announced plans to introduce legislation that will allow abortion on demand through the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.

The Os Arcos clinic has not yet filed plans for approval of the Portuguese health ministry, pending the lifting of the country’s abortion ban.
