1st. Catholic Bishop (Nepal)

Pope Benedict XVI has raised the Catholic community in Nepal to the level of an apostolic prefecture, naming Father Anthony Francis Sharma, SJ, to become the first bishop and apostolic prefect.

Bishop-elect Sharma, a native of Kathmandu, was born in 1937 and ordained as a Jesuit priest in 1968.

He will preside over a community of about 6,700 Catholics, served by 51 priests and 112 religious.

Catholics constitute less than one-thirtieth of 1% of Nepal’s 23.7 million
