Diocesan Appointments 2022 : Diocese of Meath

Fr Seamus Houlihan is appointed Parish Priest of Kilcormac.

Fr Liam Malone is appointed Parish Priest of Nobber-Kilbeg.

Fr Richard Matthews is appointed Parish Priest of Slane.

Fr Pádraig McMahon is appointed Parish Priest of Athboy and Vicar Forane.

Fr Joseph Campbell is appointed Curate in Mullingar and Diocesan Secretary.

Fr Paul Crosbie is appointed Administrator in Mullingar.

Fr Williams Awoshiri is appointed Curate in Mullingar.

Fr Eusebius Tulbure is appointed Curate in Kells.

Fr Liam Malone was ordained on 8 June 1997 in his home parish of Trim. His first appointment brought him to Mullingar as hospital chaplain until he was assigned to Kells as Curate in September 2001.

Fr Pádraig McMahon was appointed Curate in Mullingar in 2008 and Administrator at the Cathedral twelve months later. A native of Kingscourt, he has worked in Navan, Clara and Rosemount parishes while also serving as director of primary school catechetics for eight years.

Fr Joseph Campbell was ordained in his home parish of on 19 June 2010 and served as Curate in St Mary's Parish, Drogheda since September 2010. Among his various roles in the Diocese of Meath, he has assisted as Vocations Director and a member of the diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes.

Having reviewed the pastoral needs of the people of the Diocese of Down and Connor, Bishop Noël Treanor has made the following appointments, which take effect from Friday 5 August:

Mensal Parishes

The mensal parishes of St Peter’s Cathedral, St Patrick’s, St Mary’s, St Colmcille’s and Holy Family, of which the Bishop was Parish Priest, no longer exists in canon law. With the exception of St Peter’s Cathedral, which is the “seat” of the bishop, the so-called mensal parishes will now have a Parish Priest as its proper pastor (cf can 515 §1) rather than an Administrator.

Bishop Fintan Monahan announces diocesan appointments for the Diocese of Killaloe

Bishop Fintan Monahan has announced the Killaloe Diocesan Appointments for 2022, which now includes the appointment of lay people to the Ministry of Pastoral Care and Ministry of Catechist.

Bishop Fintan said, “In 2018, an innovative decision was taken to introduce two new lay ministries in the Killaloe Diocese as part of the diocesan response to a changed situation where numbers of priests are steadily declining in our Church.   The two new ministries would work alongside priests and people in parishes and pastoral areas across the Diocese helping local Christian Communities to reach out to the wider community and easing the burden of work on the diminishing number of priests in the Diocese.

Ministry of Pastoral Care

“This Ministry includes visiting those who are ill or elderly at home or in nursing homes and having a special care for those who are isolated or on their own in the community.  They will be available to offer sensitive care to those who are bereaved according to their wishes and needs or to help families at times of funerals through, for example, helping to prepare funeral liturgies which are meaningful to families.

Ministry of Catechist

“The focus of Ministry of Catechist is on helping people in their own faith development.  This ministry will take different forms depending on local needs, reaching out to families at significant moments in the family faith story.”

Bishop Fintan Monahan went on to say “I offer my sincere thanks to all the clergy, religious and faithful of the diocese for the ongoing good work, dedication and generosity of service in the diocese.  Every good wish and blessing to all who take on a new role this Summer.”

As flagged yesterday, CWI has returned and is now in the process of beginning to launch its latest investigation results for all of you.

We here at CW pride ourselves on being thorough, balanced and fair in all areas of an investigation, and this will also cover the publication online also.

The beginning of our publishing will begin once the final legal hurdles are cleared, but let us tease you a little....

It involves 2 bishops, a few clergy of at least 2 denominations, a whole heap of spurious and false allegations, some international involvement and a load of local involvement....on a level not seen before....

Unlike others, we will not attempt to control the narrative, but we will also make sure that each and every comment is verifiable, honest and relative.

"Priestless funerals"? Dublin's Catholic Church looks for solutions to critical numbers

 

The new strategy "Building Hope" sees Dublin parishes sharing assets including finances, personnel and volunteers and could very well see lay-led liturgies at funerals.

Due to the aging clergy and lack of new admissions into the seminary, the Catholic archdiocese of Dublin is bringing in new measures, including appointing priests to oversee multiple parishes and sharing assets volunteers and finances. They may even allow lay members of the church to preside over funerals. 

There are 207 parishes in the Archdiocese of Dublin. Reports show that since February 2020 34 priests have died. Only one student entered the seminary during that time to train as a Catholic priest. While sharing parishes may be a solution now the archdiocese has warned that this is just a stopgap that would solve the problem for perhaps five or 10 years.

Father Aquinas Duffy the parish priest of Cabinteely, who also works across up to 15 parishes in the Bray Deanery, in Dublin, spoke to the Irish Independent about the Archdiocese's lack of priests.

“Anybody who works in parishes can see the structures are collapsing around us. We are at a crossroads. The time for talk is over – concrete action needs to be taken," Fr Duffy said.

Fr Duffy said that due to this crisis parishes could rely increasingly on lay-led liturgies. He said even now parish priests could perform 500 funerals per year in two parishes. 

"There is no way one priest can do 500 funerals the way we do them now. So we have to go down the road of lay people being trained to lead funeral services and burials."

He added, “People will get very upset by that and will give out, but that is the reality of the situation that is about to hit parishes...

“I think it is a shock still to people. There are a lot of lay people and priests who are still in denial about the reality of the situation that we are in.

“This crisis has been coming for many years, but Covid has pushed us further over the cliff. The crossroads we are at now will determine the future of the Catholic Church in Ireland.”

As the reality begins to hit home, Fr Duffy said that Catholic Church at a higher level will be forced to face deeper questions. 

Fr Duffy asked "Who is going to provide the Eucharist in the future? We have to try and find solutions.

"If we don’t consider issues like women priests and married clergy, we are only fooling ourselves. If we miss this opportunity now, it is a decision to let it all collapse.”

"Building Hope"

Speaking in April 2021 at the launch of "Building Hope" Archbishop Dermot Farrell said the new task force and their findings would “prepare an approach to a pastoral strategy” that supports parishes to undertake a “radical renewal”, and that will allow communities of faith to look to the “future with creativity”, the Irish Catholic reports.

Dr. Farrell said “I want the task force to stimulate reflection and creative thinking across the whole community, in parishes and in organizations committed to the well-being of the people, to guide a process of dialogue which will continue as we develop and implement our plans for the future.

“To assist the task force, I am also establishinhttps://www.irishcentral.com/topic/dubling an expert panel in the areas of the economic, social and pastoral situation in Dublin, and the trends which will shape our situation over the next 25 years. Their advice will help us to consider the views and priorities of the many organizations delivering services to the people of Dublin,” Archbishop Farrell said.

He added “There is an urgency, and this cannot be an endless process,” he said, continuing, “It will give us all a basis for moving forward together with hope, confident that the Spirit is with those who respond to the call to follow the one who is the Lord of tomorrow as well as today”.

CWI: Clerical Whispers Investigates : Back In The Game

My dear colleagues, brothers and sisters in Christ and all who visit this site, we are delighted to announce the re-activation of CWI: Clerical Whispers Investigates.

Over the last few months, we have been keeping eyes on some stories 'breaking out' elsewhere, and have decided to start our own investigations again.

Due to the nature of some (if not all) claims and allegations in one particular scenario, it was decided to get legal assistance, external (i.e. international) and local (i.e.Irish) qualified and discreet investigators, and all the evidence that can be obtained AND lawfully published thus far.

Having 

 

* carried out over 13 separate branches of inquiry and investigation,  

 

* availed of legal advice, 

 

* interviewed many parties involved,

 

* read, seen, listened and watched as much verifiable evidence as is legally permissable to publish, it hasnow been decided that we here in CW will now proceed to publishing the majority of these claims - with EVIDENCE.

 

What remains unmentioned and unpublished is solely down to the fact that there is now legal concern and action to take place, and where permitted, and legally advised, reference will be made.

Such allegations that WILL be published / challenged shall contain

* Names that will identify ALL persons concerned;

* Evidence - documentary shall also be published in total;

* Current update as to where the matter is currently situated, and

* Right to reply shall be accorded to all parties concerned.

ii) A significant inaccuracy, misleading statement or distortion once recognised will be corrected, promptly and with due prominence - on condition that evidence and information to the contrary of that presented is forwarded / notified to Clerical Whispers within a period of 28 days of original posting.

iii) Where determined and deemed as appropriate - an apology will be published for 5 consecutive days and also attached to the original posting.

iv) A posting will, as far as is possible, report fairly and accurately the outcome of an action for defamation to which it has been a party, unless an agreed settlement states otherwise, or an agreed statement is published.

 

2. Opportunity to reply

Clerical Whispers will ALWAYS offer a right to reply to those who clearly indicate as to why they may feel aggrieved with a posting, comment and/or contribution within 28 days of original being published online.

i) Invitation to reply will always be offered via either a private email which remains confidential or through a formal posting of a reply either in comment form or in actual posting itself.

New Beginnings

It is over 5 years since we last published on this blogspot, and in the interim, so much has happened on the international stage - whether religiously, politically, socially or otherwise.

Perhaps, during that time, this blog would have been kept in overdrive for the want of keeping you all updated with all that happened, and continues to happen.

In the last year or so alone, many of us who had held positions here in CW, were in touch and felt it wsas time to start opening this blog again, and we cast this idea further beyond ourselves and just under 96% of those we surveyed supported the idea of our starting to publish again.

Once we had that survey back, discussed the results, and reflected on whether we could proceed, the numbers we need to keep it going etc etc - we decided to again take a month out to discuss this with the site founder, amongst ourselves again, and some external advisors.

And the result of all of this.....?

15 months on from when we started to discuss this as a possibility, it is now a definite return....

.....and the team has started the work already with one major story - from Ireland (and accompanying international flavour) - going to be the big opener for us, as well as being an eye-opener for some of the main characters.

We will begin to publish as soon as we have final legal clearance to do so.

Irish woman claims priest performed sacrament of the sick on her "for being gay"

 

An Irish documentary has revealed that an Irish priest gave a young woman the last rites in a bid to "cure" her of her homosexuality.

The RTÉ documentary "Outitude" reveals how Irish woman Marina Forrestal was anointed with oil on various parts of her body by an Irish priest in the mid-1970s in a practice similar to last rites to the sick or dying. 

The Irish Mirror reports that Forrestal described the practice as "ritual abuse" in the hour-long documentary, adding that she was also subjected to recession therapy by a priest. 

She claimed that she had her hands anointed against masturbation during the sacrament and said gay men subsequently told her that they had their genitals anointed during the same religious practice. 

Forrestal, who now works as an artist and community organizer, told the documentary that she sought help from a support group after breaking up with her first girlfriend. 

"I met my first girlfriend in 1974. When we split, I was really lovesick, I couldn't get over it by myself. I needed help," she said. 

"Within my support group actually there was a priest who was supposed to have a gift of healing and he invited me to come and have a number of sessions with him.

"During one of the sessions, he told me that I shouldn't look at any women's magazines anymore because of the underwear ads.

"He did recession therapy with me which evolved me lying down and closing my eyes and going into some kind of, I don’t know, altered state, I suppose." 

She said the priest made her imagine that Jesus discovered her in bed with a lover, asking her how she thought Jesus would feel about it. 

She said the priest became angry and slammed his fist on a nearby table when she told him that she thought Jesus would be "fine" about it. 

Forrestal claims the priest told her: “If you're going to continue to romanticize this thing, I'm not going to be able to help you any further."

The priest carried out the sacrament of the sick in their very next session together, Forrestal said. 

"So he took out a bottle of oil and he asked me if I had any connection with the occult first so I said ‘no’ and so he did this anointing of the oil.

"He asked me did I masturbate, and he anointed my hands against masturbation.

"I had to say how sorry, I was, and stuff."

She said he also anointed other parts of her body and gave her a bottle of holy water so that she could anoint her genitals when she went home. 

"When he came to my genitals, he told me I was to take the bottle home, thank goodness.

"I have since spoken with men who have had their genitals anointed in rituals like this. I now consider that to be ritual abuse." 

She added: “I think he had his sexual fantasies, I don't think he thought he was putting them on me but I think he was putting them on me.

“And I think that thing of the sacrament of the sick for being gay is a perversion.

“It was a shaming of me. And it was a ritual shaming. And it did involve sexuality. And it was wrong, it was very wrong.”

"Outitude" also documents other forms of homophobia, stories of coming out, and activism within the Irish lesbian community from the 1970s to the present day. 

The documentary also explores cases of homophobia and discrimination in Irish universities and bars.
