GUATEMALA - Bishops: Justice for the 40 girls who died in the Guatemalan fire

"The tragedy at the Hogar Virgen de la Asunción reception center was not a simple accident, but the tragic end of an irregular situation that had been denounced so many times", said the President of the Episcopal Conference of Guatemala (CEG) and Bishop of the diocese of Solola-Chimaltenango, His Exc. Mgr. Gonzalo de Villa y Vásquez, S.J. during the recent presentation of the final document of the CEG at the plenary Assembly.

"Together with the entire Guatemalan society we ask for an investigation, the just punishment of those responsible and urgent preventive measures so similar situations are not repeated", said Mgr. de Villa y Vásquez.

The demand for justice on behalf of the Bishops regards the terrible fire that occurred in the Hogar Virgen de la Asunción reception center for teenagers, where 40 girls were killed.

In the second part of the document the Bishops express a strong appreciation for the constitutional reform to overcome impunity and corruption.

The final part expresses gratitude to the Holy Father for the news of the beatification, on 23 September in Oklahoma (USA) of Venerable Servant of God Fr. Stanley Francis Rother, an American missionary murdered on July 28, 1981 in the Parish of Santiago Atitlán, Sololá, Guatemala
