TAHITI - Appointment of the Archbishop of Papeete

Image result for Fr. Jean-Pierre Cottanceau, SS.CC.On 15 December 2016 the Holy Father appointed Fr. Jean-Pierre Cottanceau, SS.CC., currently Apostolic Administrator of the same ecclesiastical circumscription as Archbishop of Papeete in Tahiti (French Polynesia).

Rev. Fr. Jean-Pierre Cottanceau, SS.CC., was born on January 14, 1953, in Ussel, in the Diocese of Tulle, France. 

After primary school in Capdenac in Aveyron, he attended high school at the Minor Seminary of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Picpus), in Villefranche de Rouergue. In 1970 he entered the Novitiate and was sent to Strasbourg for theological formation. He was ordained a priest on May 10, 1980.


Since his ordination he has held the following roles: 1979-1981: Pastoral service in the parish of St. Gabriel, Paris; 1982: He obtained a Doctorate in Biblical Theology at the University of Strasbourg; 1981-1985: Chaplain of the Hélène Boucher and Maurice Ravel middle schools in Paris; 1985-1986: Studies at the French School in Jerusalem (Ecole Biblique et Archéologique Française); 1986-1988: Director of the Minor Seminary of Graves; 1988-1994: Provincial Director of the Southern Region (Picpus) for two terms; 1998-2000: Moved to Papeete, appointed Superior of Picpus (SS.CC.) of Pirae; Responsible for initial formation; Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Major Seminary in Papeete; Animator of theological courses for the laity and university Chaplain; 2000-2010: Pastor of the Sacré-Coeur, Arue (Papeete); 2010-2015: Formator of seminarians in Prenovitiate Damian Formation Centre, in Quezon City, Manila, Philippines; since 2015: Apostolic Administrator of Papeete.
