The President of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV), His Exc.
Mgr. Diego Padrón, who came to Rome to accompany His Exc. Mgr. Enrique
Porras Cardozo, Archbishop of Mérida, created Cardinal in the consistory
held on November 19, in an interview to Fides commented on the serious
situation that Venezuela is currently experiencing.
"First of all - said Mgr. Padrón - one cannot speak of dialogue between
government and opposition, because the opposition in this case is made
up of 80% of Venezuelans, therefore the government must change its
attitudes and accept true dialogue".
"Neither the Church nor the population - he continues - see a positive
development of the dialogue process that began on 30 October. There must
be gestures of goodwill, such as respect for human rights. Secondly,
channels for humanitarian aid offered to us for all Venezuelans, who are
in urgent need of food and especially of medicine, must be opened"
stresses the Archbishop to Fides.
"The saddest thing is that the population is falling into depression,
because they do not see a way out, they do not see how they can move
forward, and dialogue is not leading to anything positive", concluded
Mgr. Padrón.
