The has become the latest victim of the storm which has ravaged the west coast and broken up roads in Inishbofin in Galway and Lahinch, Co Clare.

Islands have said the Plassey cargo ship, which has been perched on the western edge of Inis Oirr, the smallest of the three Aran Islands has been turned around by strong gales and roaring waves from the Atlantic.

Paddy Crowe, the Inis Oirr Co-op Chairman told independent.ie "The storm bend the bow of it. It completely hit it and moved it. The bow came in, but you couldn't get close to it to see because it's too dangerous."

The Plassey has been a source of particular interest for Fr Ted fans as well as visitors to the tiny island.

While there have been no casualties on the island, parts of the island's roads have fallen away along with the boat slipway and the island's small beach.

"There was about sixteen acres of lake on the island and the sea has filled into it, and it has knocked everything before it. It took the doors and the jams out of the lighthouse," Mr Crowe added.

Inis Oírr is the smallest of the three Aran Islands and is located in Galway Bay, one of the most Westerly points in Europe.
