Cardinal Ricardo Maria Carles Gordo, the retired Archbishop of Barcelona, Spain, died on December 17 at the age of 87.
A native of Valencia, Cardinal Carles Gordo was ordained to the
priesthood in 1951, and named Bishop of Tortosa in 1969. In 1990 he
became Archbishop of Barcelona, remaining in that post until his
retirement in 2004 at the age of 77.
He was elevated to the College of
Cardinals by Pope John Paul II in 1994.
