Dioceses shift activism focus

The Diocese of Wrexham has decided to dismiss its Justice and Peace employee leaving just nine dioceses with workers in this field.

Maria Pizzoni has been told that funding for her part-time role would end in August following a diocesan review.

Wrexham is the latest diocese to cut this position following the Diocese of Leeds' decision last month to make their Justice and Peace co-ordinator redundant.

Only nine out of the 22 dioceses in England and Wales have Justice and Peace fieldworkers and only in one diocese, the Archdiocese of Liverpool, is the post full-time.

In a statement the National Justice and Peace Network (NJPN), whose aims are accepted by the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, said it was very concerned by the decision to end Ms Pizzoni's employment, praising her "great contribution".

In a statement the Diocese of Wrexham said that they could no longer fund the post but intended to embed justice and peace work in the life and mission of the Diocese.
