Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor Godfrey Onah as the new Bishop
of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, Enugu State, a church official said.Rev. Fr. Chuma Nnamene, the Director of Social Communication in Nsukka Catholic Diocese, said Onah would succeed retiring Bishop Francis Okobo.
Nnamene said Onah was before his appointment the Vice-Rector at the Pontifical Urban University, Rome.
"Yes, Pope Francis has approved Onah, a professor of Philosophy and Theology, to succeed Bishop Francis Okobo of Nsukka Catholic Diocese.
"Okobo is the pioneer bishop of Nsukka Diocese when the diocese was curved out from Enugu Diocese in 1990.
"The diocese is happy on the appointment of the new bishop as well as the achievements of the outgoing bishop," Nnamene said
Mr Felix Odoh, a Christian father, said that the diocese would ever remain grateful to Okobo as the pioneer bishop of the diocese who worked tirelessly to develop the church.
"I am happy that today the diocese has got a new bishop who will continue where Okobo stopped.
"The diocese is grateful to Pope Francis for approving a new bishop for the diocese since Okobo is due for retirement," Odo said.
Timothy Ezema, a Catholic youth, said that the task before the new bishop would be to ensure that the cathedral building of the diocese started more than 10 years was completed.
"The Catholic faithful of the diocese will be happy if the new bishop completes the cathedral building in the next three years.
"Okobo has tried by ensuring that building was roofed and plastered.
"My prayer is that God will grant the new bishop the wisdom and blessing to pilot the affairs of the diocese," Ezema said.
