Priest who was 'bullied' decides to leave country

Fr Bill McGeady (74) shocked the people of Glencolmcille in Co Donegal when he said he had suffered physical and mental abuse.

Parishioners who wanted him to stay marched to the parochial house in an effort to persuade him to change his mind.

However, the Jesuit, a great-uncle of Ireland footballer Aiden McGeady, has taken up a new role as a curate in Edinburgh.

Supporters claimed a handful of people had forced the priest out of the west Donegal parish.

"We hope they are happy now," said one of his supporters yesterday. "We might never have our priest back again because of the shortage of priests. Father Bill will be sorely missed."
