I
warmly congratulate Father Brendan Leahy as the new Bishop of Limerick.
I have known Father Brendan for many years in his role of Professor of
Theology in Saint Patrick’s College Maynooth.
While he is a well-known native of Dublin, Father Brendan has family
roots in Ballyferriter parish in Kerry. His father will be remembered
to the people of Athea in West Limerick, where he was a former teacher.
Father Brendan will be a worthy successor to another Dublin priest and bishop, Bishop Emeritus of Limerick Donal Murray.
In the context of his academic background as Professor of Theology,
Father Brendan will no doubt be made particularly welcome as the new
chair of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.
I would
like to assure Father Brendan of a warm welcome to the Munster province.
I wish him every blessing in his new ministry serving the very fine
priests and people of Limerick over the coming years.
