Church bans theology in university

The Archbishop of Lima, Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani, has told the "Catholic" university in Peru that it can no longer teach theology.

In a solicitor's letter dated 21 December, the last day of the academic year, the cardinal revoked the canonical licence of teachers of theology at the university.

It is the latest round of the cardinal's dispute with the university which led the Vatican, in July 2012, to remove its titles "Pontifical" and "Catholic".

The university is continuing to call itself the "Pontifical University of Peru".

Theology is currently obligatory in foundation courses, and its absence will damage the university's claim to be Catholic.

The cardinal's action did not become public until the end of December.
