Nearly one in ten people who say they are atheists - some nine per
cent - also claim to belong to the Church of England (CofE), a new study
has found.
Research by the Christian think-tank Theos examining the beliefs of
"non-religious" people in the UK, also showed that one per cent of those
saying they did not believe in God considered themselves Catholic.
The findings, which were collected for Theos by the polling firm
ComRes in two polls involving nearly 3,000 people and compared to the
results of the 2008 British Social Attitudes Survey - showed that the
majority of people in the UK have some form of religious belief, and
that a significant minority of atheists and those who never attend
church services also identify themselves as Christian.
