Buckley facing alleged sham-marriage charges

DISSIDENT Catholic priest Pat Buckley is to stand trial in connection with sham marriage allegations, a judge ruled last Wednesday.

The maverick cleric and 14 other defendants appeared before Belfast Magistrates' Court to establish whether there is a case to answer.

Buckey (60), whose title is not recognised by the Catholic Church, is accused of officiating at up to a number of sham weddings - a claim he categorically denies.

It is alleged that Buckley, of The Oratory, Queen Street, Larne, conspired with others to defraud the home secretary by facilitating entry into the UK of non-EU nationals on dates between January 2004 and September 2009.

The allegations are connected to a major police investigation into a suspected immigration scam.

Also appearing in court was the former solicitor Ho Ling Mo. The 40-year-old, of Oakwood Park, Belfast, is facing a similar charge of conspiracy to defraud the home secretary.

None of the accused gave evidence or called witnesses during the preliminary enquiry proceedings.

District Judge Fiona Bagnall ruled that there was a case to answer and returned all 15 accused for trial at Belfast Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

The defendants were each released on their own bail of £500.

One of those facing conspiracy to defraud charges, Tania Custodia Condessa Real (24) of Cliftonpark Avenue, Belfast, was ordered not to leave Northern Ireland without the court's permission.
