Group still has Mass appeal after 40 years

IN 40 years, they have never missed a Sunday Mass.

Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin led the anniversary celebrations for the Rathmines Folk Group which marked its 40th birthday.

The country's longest-running folk group has had more than 200 members down the years, and last night many of those gathered at the Church of Mary Immaculate Refuge of Sinners in Rathmines.

"The group's success over 40 years is marked by the fact that it has continued to be such a point of reaching-out to young adults," said Dr Martin. "Whether far from home or away home for the first time, the Folk Mass was a lifeline of welcome."

Folk group founder member Kevin McNamara said: "We now begin a new chapter and we hope to continue the legacy of making the liturgy meaningful to people's lives."
