Denis Hurley charity launched

Supporters of the late Archbishop of Durban, Denis Hurley OMI, last week launched a charity in his memory to raise funds for a new centre to house its outreach work in Durban.

The South African prelate, a staunch opponent of apartheid, opened a centre for the needs of the poor which has served 46,000 people.

The Denis Hurley Association, which was launched at Archbishop's House in Westminster by auxiliary Bishop John Arnold, needs a further £0.6m to build a £2m centre better to house its clinic, feeding programme and services for refugees, the homeless and people with HIV.

Hurley, who was born in Cape Town to Irish parents, became the world's youngest bishop in 1947 and was a key figure during the Second Vatican Council, where he gave ten speeches and made four written submissions.
