During his trial for theft of confidential papal documents, Paolo Gabriele testified that he had spoken with Cardinal Angelo Comastri, among other Vatican officials, about his concerns that Pope Benedict XVI was being misled by subordinates.
But Gabriele said that he acted alone in taking the Vatican documents, and Cardinal Comastri has vigorously rejected the idea that he was associated with the thefts.
“They’re all lies,” the cardinal told the ANSA news agency, referring to rumors of his involvement. “The truth will make its own way.”
