Italian Bishops Conference CEI: "teaching religion isn't indictrination but a cultural and educational class. It is a course that is to be safeguarded to guarantee everybody. And the Catholic Church has no interest to lower its level".

The statement was made by CEI Secretary Father Mariano Crociata on referring to the debate that has been triggered by the declarations of Minister Profumo.

"IRC religion classes - he explained - are not a form of Catholic indoctrination, they are a cultural and educational course aimed at teaching and learning the cultural language of the Country, which has its roots in Catholicism. Teaching IRC religion classes to foreign strudents is like teaching them Italian."
