Vatican still waiting for formal SSPX response to June letter

The Vatican has not yet received a formal response from the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) to a proposal for reconciliation that the Holy See made in June, according to reporter Andrea Tornielli of La Stampa

In July, after a general chapter meeting, SSPX leaders said that they would not accept the latest Vatican offer.

The leaders of the traditionalist group gave strong indications that they hoped to continue talks with the Vatican, however.

Yet Tornielli reports that the officials in Rome are still waiting for any official reply from the traditionalist group.

Vatican officials are probably not pushing for a quick response, Tornielli writes, because of a keen understanding that Bishop Bernard Fellay, the SSPX leader, faces the delicate task of maintaining unity within the group, with some members adamantly opposed to a reconciliation with Rome.
