Priest refuses to read letter in church about same-sex marriage

A CATHOLIC priest said he refused to read out a letter opposing same-sex marriage because it did not reflect his views nor those of his parishioners.

The priest, who did not want to be named, was one of at least five churchmen who defied Cardinal Keith O’Brien by not reading the letter in church on Sunday.

He said members of his “down-to-earth, working class” parish were unhappy that the cardinal and the Church came across as homophobic.

Supporters of the Church’s leader in Scotland said the cardinal’s letter was an attempt at peace-making that had been hijacked by same-sex marriage lobbyists.
