African Catholic laity and the new evangelisation

The Pope's trip to Benin“Being testimonies of Christ in Africa today. Salt of the earth…light of the world,”” this is the theme of the pan African Congress of Catholic Laity, promoted by the Pontifical Council for the Laity and due to be held from 4 to 9 September in Yaoundé, in Cameroon.
The Congress is part of the Pontifical Council for the Laity’s rich and lively tradition of organising lay Catholic regional or continental congresses in different parts of the world.

The continental Congress will be held at the Catholic University of Central Africa, after the Pope’s visit to Cameroon and Angola from 17 to 23 March 2009 and more recently to Benin from 18 to 20 November 2011 for the presentation of the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation ''Africae Munus''.

“The meeting shows the commitment of the Pontifical Council for the Laity in proceeding along with individual Churches,” the Dicastery’s communiqué reads.

“This should encourage the laity to become active members of the Catholic Church and testimonies of their faith in Jesus Christ in Africa today.”
