Mainstream TV ‘needs religious voices’

The chairman of judges at a religious broadcasting awards ceremony has urged the inclusion of more faith voices on popular political affairs programmes such as Newsnight and Question Time.

Speaking at the annual Sandford St Martin Awards for religious broadcasting at Lambeth Palace last Wednesday, Paul Donovan, a Catholic journalist, said all broadcasters need to review the way in which they cover faith.

Mr Donovan said "Faith has real relevance for life today and as such should be reflected across the broadcast spectrum. It must be mainstream."

He called on the BBC to broaden the faith dimension in its current affairs coverage and said it would also be good "to hear a faith view on economic, environmental or peace discussions."
