Bishops announce new staff for Irish College

The Episcopal trustees of the Irish College in Rome have appointed two new members of staff, to replace the vice rector and director of formation who are standing down and returning to Ireland to take up duties in their dioceses.

Fr George Hayes of the Diocese of Kerry has been appointed Vice Rector and replaces Fr Albert McDonnell, while Fr Hugh Clifford of the Diocese of Galway has been appointed Director of Formation and replaces Fr Billy Swan.

The trustees, Cardinal Seán Brady, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop Dermot Clifford and Archbishop Michael Neary, have yet to appoint a new spiritual director to the college, which was founded in 1628 and which currently accommodates 23 Irishmen out of a total of 58 seminarians studying for the priesthood there.

The other 35 seminarians hail from 22 countries.

The four archbishops, who also act as trustees of St Patrick’s College Maynooth, announced the appointment of Rev Dr Kevin O’Gorman SMA as lecturer in moral theology at the college.
