Aung San Suu Kyi’s re-election gives Vatican hope

Vatican broadsheet “L’Osservatore Romano” has given ample space to the victory of the Burmese opposition leader.

L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican’s daily broadsheet, has given extensive coverage of the electoral victory of Burmese opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, complete with photo.

“The seat of hope” is the title of the article which describes the elections in Myanmar. Aung San Suu Kyi’s election – the Vatican newspaper explains in its subheading – could open the way to a loosening of sanctions against Myanmar.”

It goes on to say that “Myanmar’s opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu  Kyi welcomed “the coming of a new era” and made an appeal for political unity after her party, the National League for Democracy (LND) claimed victory in Sunday’s by-elections.”

“The out come of this round of voting – L’Osservatore Romano revealed – could bring huge economic benefits to the whole of Myanmar.”

The newspaper explained that “A number of western observers have emphasised that now, the financial sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union could at least be loosened;” particularly if, following the by-election results, “democratic opening and reforms do not backtrack dramatically” bringing former Burma the investments in infrastructure, energy and tourism which its economy so badly needs.”
