Vatican: Pope to meet Archbishop of Canterbury in March

The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams who heads the Anglican Church will meet with Pope Benedict XVI next month in Rome, television news agency Romereports said.

Splits among followers of the Anglican faith over the issues of ordination of women priests and homosexuality prompted Benedict in 2009 to issue new rules allowing Anglican priests who want to join the Roman Catholic Church to do so and remain married.

The Anglican Church is led by the Church of England, which split from the Vatican in 1534 King when Henry VIII couldn't convince Pope Clement VII to grant him an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon.

Benedict and Williams are due to pray together at the church of San Gregorio al Celio, located in front of the Palatine Hill, once the residential neighbourhood ancient Roman rulers that gave the English language the world "palace."

The pope met with Rowan during his trip to England in September 2010.
