Religious congress to screen Euro games

FOOTBALL fans attending this summer's International Eucharist Congress in Dublin have had their prayers answered after the Catholic Church indicated it would show Ireland's Euro 2012 matches on the big screen, writes Nick Bramhill.

Religious chiefs said they would facilitate the thousands of fans attending the Congress in Dublin's RDS in June by showing games after the faithful have taken communion.

The week-long programme of events from June 10 coincides with the tournament.

Ireland play their first match against Croatia on June 11.

However, one of the event's organisers insisted that sport would be a major theme at what will be the 50th Congress. Fr Kevin Doran, the secretary general, said: "Wouldn't it be interesting to celebrate Mass in the RDS arena and then stay on to watch the match on the big screen?"

"We even have an Austrian bishop offering a workshop on 'communion and sport'."

Fr Doran said more than 5,000 people had already booked their places for the Congress.
